Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP): What Patients Need to Know

The landscape of dental care in Canada is shifting. For many families in neighborhoods like Katimavik and Beaverbrook, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) represents a long-awaited opportunity to prioritize oral health without the stress of financial barriers. However, we know that reading through government eligibility requirements can be confusing. As Kanata Family Dentistry  is local care providers, we want to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Who is Actually Eligible?

The most common confusion we see at the front desk involves private insurance. Kanata is a hub for technology and government employment, meaning many of our patients have workplace benefits. The rule is strict: if you have access to any private dental insurance—even if you don't use it or find the coverage limited—you generally do not qualify for the CDCP. This program is specifically designed to fill the gap for those who have no other safety net, particularly our local seniors and retirees who may have lost their work benefits years ago.

Using Your Coverage at Kanata Family Dentistry We are proud to participate in this program because we believe access to care is fundamental. Once you receive your welcome package from Sun Life, your next step is to book a comprehensive new patient exam. Bring your card and your ID. This initial visit is crucial because it allows Dr. Al-Taweel or Dr. Schooley to map out a treatment plan that aligns with what the CDCP covers.

What is Covered?

The plan covers the essentials that keep you healthy: dental cleanings, X-rays, fillings, and extractions. It shifts the focus from "fixing problems when they hurt" to "preventing problems before they start."

If you require major work, such as crowns or dentures, pre-authorization will be required later in the rollout.

Have you received your CDCP card? Don’t let it sit in a drawer. Call us at (613) 801-7583 or book an appointment online to activate your care.
